Because Novak Djokovic does not intend to get the COVID-19 vaccine, it is unlikely that he will be able to compete in the 2022 U.S. Open.
The tennis superstar from Serbia revealed on his Twitter account that he will not be able to compete in the year’s final Grand Slam tournament in New York.
Because the CDC mandates that all non-U.S. citizens must be completely vaccinated in order to enter the country, it was unclear whether or not Djokovic would be able to participate in the tournament.
Because of his lack of up-to-date vaccinations, Novak Djokovic will not be able to compete in the upcoming Grand Slam event for a second time this year. After a court unanimously rejected his attempt to challenge Immigration Minister Alex Hawke’s decision to cancel his visa on the grounds of public interest, he was deported from Australia prior to the beginning of the Australian Open. The decision to cancel his visa was based on the public interest.
Following his deportation, Djokovic gave an interview to the BBC in which he stated that he is not against vaccinations but that he has “always supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body.” The 35-year-old player also mentioned that he is “willing” to skip tournaments in his statement.
There was some uncertainty regarding whether or not Djokovic would be allowed to compete in the French Open. After restrictions on COVID-19 were lifted in most public places in France in March, it turned out that this wasn’t a problem at all.
In April, it was announced by the organizers at the All England Club that players would not be required to be vaccinated in order to compete at Wimbledon.
Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros tournament. He successfully defended his Wimbledon title by prevailing in the championship match against Nick Kyrgios in four sets. Since that match on July 10, the 21-time Grand Slam champion has not competed in any matches.
Since 2017, this will be the first time that Novak Djokovic will not be competing in the United States Open. Additionally, this will be the fourth year in a row that he has not won the tournament, making it his longest active winless streak in a Grand Slam competition.
Since 2018, Djokovic has not won fewer than one Grand Slam tournament in a single season than he did in 2022, when he won one.
On Monday, play in the main draw of the 2022 U.S. Open will get underway. The men’s championship match is scheduled for September 11th.
